A belated Happy New Year for 2013!

Posted by Jordan on 7th January 2013

A bit late but I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and all the best in 2013.

The last few weeks have been extremely busy and I haven’t had much time to work on personal projects as any non-work time has been with my girlfriend and family over the holiday season.

A client has asked for a meet up with myself, the developer (who has flown in for Xmas from Amsterdam) and copywriter as it has been some time since we last met and would be great for team-building before the developer heads back home. It’s really got me thinking about how freelancers operate as the days I am free, someone else isn’t and the day they are free, I am not.

I am now frantically trying to move appointments and reschedule a bunch of things but like falling dominoes, each rescheduled meeting/appointment will conflict with something else. The whole situation has made me look through my calendar in depth and it suddenly dawned on me that I very rarely can find 7-8 uninterrupted hours (the time it would take to head to London for the meet up and come back – door to door).

The last three Portsmouth Freelancer Meets have been missed as I have been working into the late evening and I am wondering if such a low level of social interaction is normal/healthy! I go to the gym a few times a week but have my headphones in and don’t talk to anyone and apart from that, in a usual week, I see Lin when she comes home from work, I might see my parents at the weekend but only see friend once every couple of weeks.

I’ve been thinking for a while that I need to adjust my planning so that it is more streamline and that I can maintain a healthy balance of personal projects/life and client-based work and the above realisation has been an abrupt wake-up call!

So as the holiday season ends and life returns to normal I think this is the ideal time to do so. I am limiting the number of projects I take on at any one time, starting next week I will be allocating time to personal projects and limiting the total amount of working hours I complete.

With these changes in effect, I would hope that I get through the personal work (2 redesigns, 2 new sites, 1 ‘secret’ project and a lot of blogging) I have planned for this year.

Again, I wish everyone a great 2013 and would love to hear what your New Year plans are! Updates will be coming soon.
